The PTE Academic test evaluates the English skills you’ll need for university and life abroad. It tests speaking, listening, reading, and writing in a way that mirrors real-life situations and academic settings.
PTE Academic is a top computer-based English test used for studying abroad and immigration. It’s accepted by universities and visa authorities in the UK and Australia. The test assesses listening, reading, speaking, and writing in a single three-hour online session.
To take the PTE Academic test, you need to visit a secure Pearson Test Centre. You’ll use a computer and headset to complete the test, which includes listening to audio, reading texts, and responding to questions.
The test covers real-life academic content. You’ll hear excerpts from lectures, view graphs and charts, and encounter various accents, including British, American, and non-native speakers, to prepare you for real-world situations.
You can schedule your test with just 24 hours’ notice, complete the three-hour test in one session, and receive your results within five business days.
PTE offers flexible test dates, with sessions available 300 days a year. You can choose from test centers in 150 locations worldwide. The PTE is approved by the UK and Australian governments and is accepted by thousands of academic programs, including Harvard, Yale, and INSEAD.
Sending extra score reports is free, so you can send your scores to as many institutions as you like.

Overall Score: Scores are out of 90. A score of 65 is considered a good indicator of your English ability in academic settings. Detailed reports show your overall performance and skill levels.
Item Scoring: All PTE Academic items are scored by machines. Some items are scored based on correctness alone, while others are evaluated on correctness, form, and quality of response.
Scoring Types:
Note: The total time for each part of the test may vary as different versions of the test are balanced for length. No candidate will always get the maximum or minimum times listed.
PTE Academic provides an overall score reflecting your English proficiency.
Q. How old do I need to be to take the PTE Academic?
You need to be at least 16 years old. If you’re between 16 and 17, you must provide a signed parental consent form. If you are 18 or older, you do not need this consent.
Q. How many times can I take the PTE?
You can take the PTE as many times as you want.
Q. Do I need to choose institutions before taking the PTE test?
No, you don’t need to choose institutions beforehand. You can select which institutions to send your scores to after you receive your results.
Q. Why does PTE use an automated scoring system?
Research shows that automated scoring is more objective and accurate than human marking. The automated system is unbiased and evaluates only your language performance, without being influenced by factors like appearance or body language. This ensures your score reflects your true English ability, and institutions receiving your score can trust its accuracy.
